Parent - Born before 1988
As a new parent there are some things to consider. This information is if you are currently on parental leave or have been on parental leave after 1 January 2019.
You will keep on earning into your occupational pension
When you are on parental leave you will keep on earning into all parts of your occupational pension as long as your parental leave is according to the Parental leave law (föräldraledighetslagen) in Sweden. It is not required to receive benefit from Försäkringskassan for this to be applicable. You will also earn into the occupational pension if you receive pregnancy benefits before the child is born. Following below is how you earn into the different parts of you occupational pension while on paternal leave:
- You will keep earning into the selectable part
- You will keep earning into Kåpan Tjänste
- You will keep earning into the defined benefit retirement pension. The period while on parental leave is calculated as pensionable employment time.

Have you been on parental leave before 1st of January 2019?
If you were on parental leave before 1st of January 2019 you earned into the part defined benefit retirement pension. The period with parental benefit is calculated as pensionable employment time.
For the parts Kåpan Tjänste and the selectable part you earned into while under parental leave, however for a maximum of 18 months per child. After the 18 months passed you earned into Kåpan Tjänste and the selectable part based on your possibly paid out salary.
Do you need repayment cover?
Repayment cover means that you family will receive the money from your pension if you pass away. Within one year after you child's birth you can add repayment cover for all the money in the selectable part, Kåpan Tjänste and Kåpan Flex. You can always add repayment cover for future premiums. How much will be paid out depends on the money that has been paid in to the insurance. Your own pension will be lower with repayment cover.
How to change your repayment cover
If you wish to add or remove repayment cover this needs to be changed with the insurer that manages the money. For Kåpan Tjänste and Kåpan Flex it is Kåpan Government Employees Pension Fund and for the selectable part it can be different depending on the insurer that you have selected.
You can see which insurer(s) that you have selected on your annual statement (Årsbesked).
Who will receive your money if you pass away?
If you have repayment cover your spouse, registered partner or cohabitant will receive the money, if none exists your children will receive the money. If your family situation changes it could be an idea to double check in which order your family will receive the money.
You can change who will receive the money or how they will be split between beneficiaries. This by a specific beneficiary clause with the insurer that manages the money.
In a specific beneficiary clause you can also chose former spouse, former registered partner, former cohabitant or their children or their foster children.
You can see which insurer(s) that you have selected on your annual statement(Årsbesked).

Change beneficiary for your group life insurance
It is your spouse, registered partner, cohabitant or your children that will receive the money from your group life insurance if you pass away while in state employment. You can change in which order your family would receive money. That is by a specific beneficiary clause. If you wish to have a specific beneficiary clause please contact our Customer Service.
Part time parental leave
If you are on part time parental leave according the parental leave law you will still earn into your occupational pension as you would have been working full time. If you have salary increment for yourr paid out salary that would also be pensionable. If you have so called föräldrapenningtillägg from your employer that would not be pensionable.
Your employer manages this with their salary system and it is not reported to SPV.
Example - Part time parental leave according to parental leave law
Charlie has a part time leave of 25 per cent. Charlie has a salary of 28 000 SEK when working full time and when working part time a salary of 21 000 SEK.
- The selectable parts pays in to based on 2,5 per cent of the salary when working full time, meaning 28 000 SEK. Pay in to the selectable part will then be 700 SEK.
- The part Kåpan Tjänste pays in to based on 2 per cent of the salary working full time. Pay in to Kåpan Tjänste will then be 560 SEK per month.
- The defined benefit retirement pension is still earned into as working full time. The part time leave is still pensionable service time.
