Local employee at a Swedish government agency abroad
If you are local employee in a Swedish government agency abroad, there are different regulations if you are Swedish or foreign citizen.
Your employer could be a Swedish Embassy, General Consulate or Business Sweden (formerly Exportrådet).
The size of your occupational pension is based on your salary and your time in employment.

Swedish Citizen
You earn into occupational pension if you:
- are employed by a Swedish government agency abroad
- are 28 years or older
- do not receive occupational pension payments
- have at least 40 per cent employment
- have an permanent employment or have been employed for a limited- time for at least six consecutive months.
Different protections of your employment
You will receive an occupational pension called retirement pension. You are also insured through your employment. That means you could receive sickness pension, survivors pension and after protection. These rights are available from when you turn 18 years old.
Things to consider before payment of pension
Send in your application three months before you want your first payment.
To pay-out to your bank account you need to register your bank account information with Swedbanks account registry.
Foreign citizen
You earn in to occupational pension if you:
- have local employment at a Swedish Government Agency abroad
- have been employed for a minimum of five years
- do not have occuaptional pension under payment
- have atleast 40 per cent employment. For every calendar year under which your employment has reached a minimum of 40 per cent of the normal working hours that is applicable for the government agency for a whole year, a percentage is calculated for you.
This is part of your employment
You will receive a occupational pension called retirement pension. You are also insured through your employment. This means you could receive:
- Sick pension, after six months employment
- Family pension, after six months employment

The embassy will send in your application three months before payment.
